A Preseli Bluestone carved moon gazing hare.
Preseli Bluestone is from the Preseli Mountains in Pembrokeshire, Wales and is the same stone that was used to form the famous sacred circle of massive standing stones at Stonehenge.
The bluestones at Stonehenge were placed there during the third phase of construction at Stonehenge around 2300 BC. It is assumed that there were about 80 of them originally, but this has never been proven since only 43 remain. The stones are estimated to weigh between 2 and 4 tons each.
The majority of the stones are believed to have been brought from the Preseli Mountains, about 250 miles away in Wales. There is a legend that says that as the stone blocks were so heavy and large that only Magic could move them and that Merlin was called to craft the spell that did.
Preseli Bluestone is a blue green form of Dolerite often with snowflake like inclusions of white Feldspar. It is often stained orange from Iron.
