Crinoidal Limestone deposits were laid down many hundreds of millions of years ago in areas covered with warm sub tropical shallow seas.
Crinoids are a marine animal related to starfish and sea urchins and were common in such warm shallow seas. As well as fossilised Crinoids these Limestones also contains fossilised coral, bivalves and brachiopods.
Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of Calcite and Aragonite much of which derived from the decomposed shells and skeletal remains of various sea creatures.
Used by the Maya and the Egyptians for building their pyramids and temples it is also the rock responsible for such natural wonders as The White Cliffs of Dover, The Niagara Escarpment and due to it's slight solubility in water to amazing cave systems around the world.
