Stromatolites are Earths oldest fossils with the oldest being formed 3.5 billion years ago. They are rock like build ups of microbial mats and form by the trapping and precipitation of particles by communities of micro-organisms such as bacteria and algae.  

A small piece of Stromatolite encodes biological activity perhaps spanning thousands of years and offer an insight into deep time on earth and the evolution of our planet and all it's life forms.
